Tokyo & Kyoto — Private guide

I guided people through forty countries. The one I most wanted to show was this one.

Walk up a mountain. Take a train to a town an hour out. Go into a place with a Japanese-only menu. Sit and talk about how this country actually works. I spent ten years showing people the world as a tour conductor. Now I do it here, in Kanto and Kansai.

I guide in Japanese, English and Portuguese. Whether you're visiting Japan or you live here.

Two kinds of work

For individual travellers

I come with you as your guide

Walk a mountain, go to a town an hour out, get into a place with a Japanese-only menu, talk about how this country works. Half a day or a full day, alongside you. I do not arrange transport or accommodation — what I sell is the guiding itself.

For travel companies

I take assignments as a tour conductor

Certified Tour Conductor, General grade, covering overseas and domestic tours. Over ten years and forty-plus countries in the field, plus more than thirty conductors trained as an instructor. Portuguese-speaking. Based in Sakura, about 30 minutes from Narita.

Four ways to spend the time

01

Walk a mountain

From a gentle first hill to a full day out on a ridge. I'll talk you through the kit as we walk.

02

Go a little further

An onsen town, a coastal village, a settlement up a valley. There is a surprising amount within a day's reach.

03

Eat, and walk

Shopping streets, markets, places down alleys. You won't have to stall in front of a Japanese-only ticket machine.

04

Talk

Shrine etiquette. Seasonal rituals. What living here is like. In person or over a call.

If you live in Japan, this is for you too

Most of my guests come from abroad, but I take the same work from people living here. One group a day, priced per group — split between family or friends, the cost per head comes down quickly.

The places locals actually go

A diner in a shopping street, an izakaya with a well-worn curtain, a coffee shop the neighbourhood keeps to itself. Eat your way along, hop between bars, or start early. We build the route around what you feel like.

How the tourism machine works

Why a place is packed at that hour. The order coach groups move in. Where you end up waiting, and where the crowd never reaches. Ten years on the inside, told plainly.

Just the conversation, if you like

You can't decide where to go next. The dates won't fit together. There's a country you want but something is holding you back. Sixty minutes online from ¥4,000 — no need to book a guiding day.

What I promise

I won't rush you

I don't pack days full. The whole thing moves at the pace of whoever walks slowest. If you want to sit down, the schedule has room for you to sit down.

I'll tell you when something won't work

An itinerary that doesn't fit, a route beyond your fitness, a day when the weather makes it unwise. You'll hear it as soon as I know it, along with an alternative.

Small groups only

Four people maximum. Beyond that I can't keep an eye on everyone — which means I can't be responsible for either the safety or the conversation.

Where I guide

Kanto

Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama

Kansai

Kyoto, Osaka and Mie (around Kumano Nachi)

I'm based in Sakura, Chiba. Other areas are worth asking about, as long as it works as a day return.

Start with a conversation

Handing over a whole day to a stranger is a lot to ask. A 60-minute online consultation is a good place to start. If it doesn't feel right, that's a perfectly fine place to stop.
